Types of Yoga
As a form of exercise, yoga has evolved into numerous different practices and subdivisions.
Hatha Yoga is perhaps the most popular form of yoga in the Western world. However, this system of yoga dates back to the 15th century in India and is known as a preparatory stage of physical purification that the body practices for higher meditation. Traditional Hatha yoga is holistic in nature, including disciplines, physical postures, purification procedures, poses, breathing, and meditation. Here in the U.S., Hatha yoga consists mainly of the physical poses and is understood as a form of exercise. A Hatha yoga class is a good place to become familiar and comfortable with yoga by learning basic poses and breathing techniques.
If you decide that hatha yoga is too slow and meditative, try Vinyasa yoga. Vinyasa means “breath-synchronized movement” so you will move from one pose to the next on the exhalation or inhalation. The poses flow together as in a dance. One great thing about a Vinyasa class is that it offers a lot of variety by combining movement with stretching. The class will depend on the teacher because there is no single philosophy or sequence that the instructor must follow. If you don’t enjoy your first Vinyasa class, try a few other classes with different teachers until you find one that suits your personality.
If you like a consistent set of poses and intense heat, you may want to check out Bikram Yoga, also known as “hot yoga”. This class consists of a series of 26 yoga poses, each of which is performed twice in a room that is heated to 100 degrees! A warm body helps to improve flexibility. Bikram yoga is not for beginners and yogis should be aware that Bikram yoga is an intense physical challenge and it is normal to lose 5-10 lbs. of water weight per class. This means that if you are going to do a Bikram class, it is extremely important to stay well hydrated both before and after class. The first few classes are likely to be a struggle, but then your body will acclimate to the environment and you will crave that sweaty sensation!
