Being flexible does not mean you are able to twist yourself into the human pretzel ala circus freak; being flexible means that you can move gracefully and with the confidence that your muscles and tendons are not so tight that you risk injury doing the simplest of tasks. The benefits of stretching to become more flexible include,
• Reduced muscle tension,
• Increased range of movement in the joints,
• Enhanced muscular coordination,
• Increased circulation of the blood to various parts of the body,
• Increased energy levels (resulting from increased circulation).
In addition to all these physiological benefits to stretching and being flexible there is also a large mental component. Stretching can help to soothe muscles that are tight from the tension of the day-to-day grind. You’re allowing your muscles to rest and heal from the stress you have unwittingly put them through throughout the day. At the very least
treat your muscle to a stretch two to three times a week; it’s likely that after doing this for several weeks you will want to do it every day.
