Flexibility    Printable Version

Being flexible does not mean being able to put your leg over your head. Being flexible means that your muscles are supple enough to perform day-to-day activities without causing a surprise injury. Stretching is one of the best things you can do to increase your flexibility. Stretching can also improve your balance and can increase blood flow to your muscles. Stretching and being more flexible helps to reduce soreness as you begin a new exercise routine and can even improve your posture.

In addition to all the great physical health benefits of exercise, there is a huge mental boost. Stretching can help release tension and relax muscles after not only a tough workout, but a tough day. Practices like yoga and Pilates improve the balance of energy between the body and the brain and will help you increase your flexibility, tone your muscles and improve your aerobic health.

The best way to maintain flexibility is to stretch regularly. At home while watching TV, and at your desk when you need a five minute mini-break, stretching is great for both your mental and physical health
