Choosing a Gym

While it is not essential that you join a gym to get fit, many people decide hitting the gym is for them. Maybe you go for the equipment, or to make new friends who have similar goals. Some gyms also have perks and extras like a pool, sauna, day care or a massage therapist which are great if they fit your lifestyle. The first thing is choosing a gym. Start by asking friends and colleagues where they go and why. Find out what they like and don’t like about their gym, and if you’re a good enough friend, ask how much they pay. Gym fees vary widely and can range from as low at $12.00 per month to over $100.00 and you generally get what you pay for.

The next step is to go check a few gyms out. You’ve asked friends and coworkers but also check the yellow pages and the internet for gyms in your area. Make a list and visit the ones that look as if they may be a good fit. When you visit, try to avoid going at the peak gym hours which are before work (6am-8am) and after work (4:00pm-6:30pm) so that you can get the full attention of the person giving you the tour. While on the tour take a look at the cleanliness of the gym itself and of the locker rooms. Also ask about other features the gym has to offer like a pool, steam room or sauna. If these are not amenities you are not looking for, you may want to skip this gym as these “extras” are often reflected in the price.

Price is the next point, do not feel pressure to sign-up right there on the spot at any gym. Take your time researching because most gyms will require you to make a one year commitment. Once you have made your choice, ask if the gym has any deals or specials. Sometimes they will waive the joining fee, or reduce your monthly rate if you pay via direct deposit. Also ask if you can pay for the services you will use. For example, some gyms different rates according to what features you will use. Some gyms have an off-peak rate that will allow you to pay a reduced fee if you come in during the slow times; generally when other people are working. This feature is great for retirees and people with very flexible work schedules. Another way to reduce your monthly payment is to skip the classes. If you know you will never step foot into a workout class, see if there is rate that applies only to member who want to use the gym equipment and locker rooms.

The most important thing about choosing your gym is that you feel comfortable and it’s a place you want to be most days of the week. You’re at the gym to improve your health, and if you’re not enjoying the place you get healthier at what’s the point?
