Nutrition guidelines have been influencing the way Americans eat since the 1940s when the first “Basic 7 Food Guide” was developed with the goal of maintaining or improving health. Despite these good intentions, the trend of chronic disease and obesity is only growing, along with America’s waistline. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 34% of adults aged 20 years and older, are considered obese as measured by a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or greater. Additionally, 18% of children 12-19 years old are considered obese. With the growing rate of obesity and chronic disease, Americans need simple, easy-to-use nutrition guidance more than ever!

Many organizations, such as the American Heart Association, American Dietetic Association, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and United States Department of Health and Human Services (USDHHS) have developed guidelines to prevent chronic disease, and maintain or improve health. The Dietary Guidelines, created in collaboration by both the USDA and USDHHS aim to reduce the prevalence of chronic diseases such as heart disease, certain types of cancer, diabetes and osteoporosis.

The goal is to create a healthier, longer living you! With tools and tips at your fingertips, take advantage of the scientific-based advice to increase the quality of your life and those of loved ones.
