Back to Basics  > Vitamins, Minerals and Phytonutrients    Printable Version

Do you remember being excited to take your vitamin when you were a kid? You may remember your mother handing you a tasty animal shaped vitamin because it will make you “strong” or “help you grow”. Your mother was on to something, we need adequate vitamins and minerals for healthy bones and teeth, energy production and growth.

As an adult we know that many vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients are found in the foods we eat. One of the best ways to ensure you’re getting enough of these vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients is to eat all the colors of the rainbow. Red peppers, orange squash, golden apples, green spinach, blue blueberries and purple grapes for example. Each of these fruits and vegetables offer vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients that the others do not. Eating a large volume and variety of fruits and vegetables is a great way to get enough of the vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients we need to stay healthy, and is also a great way to manage weight; fruits and vegetables, with their high fiber and water content are very filling for few calories. So have a large salad for dinner tonight and eat enjoy the rainbow of health!
