Tips for Staying Hydrated
Staying hydrated is essential no matter what time of year. While water is a great choice, there are other fluids that will hydrate; chose carefully as beverages are often hidden sources of many empty calories.
Great Choices
The majority of the time choose these fluid to stay hydrated. They have little to no calories and taste great!
• Water!
• Seltzer Water
• Decaffeinated Herbal Teas
• Water!
HINTS:
• Add mint leaves, lemon or cucumber to add a little pep to these beverages.
• Fruit can also contribute to your fluid intake; one cup of fruit counts for about ½ cup of fluid (4 ounces). Try freezing fruit for a refreshing and hydrating snack or dessert.
Okay Choices
These beverages are great source of hydration, but should be used to supplement the “great” choices, as they can contribute caffeine and/or calories
• Tea
• Coffee
• Fat-free or low-fat milk
• 100 % Fruit juice
• Sports drinks
"Think Again" Choices
These beverages should be chosen in moderation because they supply a lot calories! And in most of these examples they are empty calories, meaning you are getting a lot of sugar and/or fat and little in the way of nutrition.
• Soda
• Whole milk (milkshakes, frappes, cabinets etc.)
• Alcohol
• Energy Drinks
• Fruit drinks (e.g. fruit juice cocktail and fruit punch)
• Sugar-sweetened soft drinks ( iced tea and lemonade)
