Is it Hunger or Thirst?

Here’s a quick tip: when you think you start to feel a little hungry, try drinking water before running into the kitchen. If your hunger goes away, you were probably thirsty, not hungry. This happens because thirst can often be confused with hunger. Before sitting down to your next meal it may be helpful to ask yourself a few key questions:

1) Am I very hungry? If you are unsure, wait 20 minutes and then ask yourself again.
2) When was the last time I ate? If it was fewer than 3 hours ago, you may be confusing hunger with thirst.
3) When was the last time I drank water? If you can’t remember, there’s a good chance you’re thirsty.
4) Could a small snack suffice instead of a large meal?

Thirst is a distinctly different sensation than hunger. Be sure to pay close attention to your environment and surroundings to monitor your thirst levels. For example, in dry climates, you may not realize that you are losing water rapidly because your sweat evaporates instantaneously.

You know that you are truly hungry when you are still hungry after a few glasses of water. So go ahead and eat!
