Finding a Place to be Active
On many hotel websites, you see a picture of a decent looking fitness room. Usually it is a picture of a piece of equipment with a mirror in the background so that the room looks twice the size. And then, of course, when you actually get to your hotel, you come to find out that that the fitness room is more like a fitness closet. It is a cramped space with a few dumbbells scattered haphazardly and perhaps the first treadmill ever created. If you are used to a nice facility, this is a major downgrade that could throw a wrench in your active pursuits.
So before you even book your hotel accommodations, be sure to your homework. This means finding a hotel with an adequately equipped and fully functional fitness facility. Do some research and if need be, ask the hotel to send you pictures of their fitness facility. It is better to be safe than to be sorry.
If you must stay at a specific hotel that does not offer a fitness facility, locate a facility, jogging track, or walking path in the area near your hotel. Or if your hotel has a pool, go swimming. Even if the pool is not big enough to do laps, just tread water. This is a great cardiovascular and strength building activity.
If you are absolutely confined to your hotel with no fitness room, desperate times call for desperate measures. Do a total body circuit using body weight exercises in your hotel room. Run or walk up and down the hotel halls. Climb the stairs in the fire exits. Do jumping jacks. You could even practice this routine at home once or twice before you travel just to make sure it works for you. Remember, you can be active wherever you are! You may just have to get a bit creative to make it happen. If you are thinking that this may be a bit extreme, think again.
