When you hear the word “meditation” what images come to mind? Do you think of an older man sitting on a foggy mountain top waiting to discover the meaning of life? Well that is exactly right. However if you conjured the image of a person washing the dishes you’d also be correct. There is no exact way to practice meditation. It is what you want it to be.
However, if you have never meditated how you would you know what you want it to be? Good question. Every day we are assaulted and over stimulated by so much: computers, people, television, noise pollution and we bounce from one thought to another. This bouncing around can detract from the task at hand. Have you ever sat down to do something only to complete it halfway because you were jumping up to get the phone or switching between three email accounts? This is the opposite of the meditative state. The meditative state is the first step toward
taking control of your mind and thereby, your actions.
The general goal when meditating is to focus on one idea or subject and focus only on this. Meditation allows you to mentally take a step back from a situation and reassess your response and approach. When your brain only focuses on one thing for several minutes (or more) it gives your psyche a chance to relax and recharge so your are more clear headed when you emerge from your meditative state.
