You do not need a lot of kitchen gear to be a great cook! Thoughtfully selected equipment will last you a long time, and will provide you with a lifetime of culinary enjoyment.

Although you can do many things by hand, there are some instances where some well-chosen appliances can be great time savers. A great chef’s knife can be one of the best investments you make. Other carefully chosen kitchen equipment and appliances can not only help you save time, but can also help you cook more healthfully by minimizing how much fat and oil you need to use.

In general, buy equipment made from non-reactive materials such as stainless steel or glass. Stainless steel is a neutral metal, which means it will not react or get pitted and stainless steel spoons are also more sanitary than wooden spoons. Materials like aluminum and copper may be pretty but they are reactive metals, meaning they will interact with acids and other ingredients.
Avoid gadgets, gimmicks and special devices. A good rule of thumb is that if it does not serve at least two purposes, you can probably live without it. Always buy quality over appearance: most of your equipment will be with you on a lifetime culinary journey.
