For some people the word “holiday” is synonymous with overeating. If you ended last holiday season a pound or two heavier, then you are like most Americans. Holiday weight gain and overeating are not inevitable; there are ways to navigate the holidays that will lead you into the New Year healthier than ever. You just need a plan.

The holiday season, from Thanksgiving to the New Year, is a busy and stressful time for most people. Events, parties, obligations and the abundance of food everywhere can hinder any well-intentioned person. The gym is ignored, eating out increases and the inability to stay focused on your healthful goals just adds to the already extremely stressful season. Instead of getting upset with yourself over certain lifestyle choices, try to be more understanding of the circumstances, and instead of aiming for perfection, try to make small goals that are obtainable.

Enjoying the holiday season one day at a time will make the season feel bearable. You can’t ignore the holidays, so why not embrace them? Practicing eating mindfully and having a strategy to handle the holiday scene are tools that will help you to finally enjoy the holidays. This year, with a little bit of foresight, you will be ringing in the New Year happy and healthier than ever before and hopefully be able to see the holidays for what they really are; a time to enjoy family and friends and a time to be thankful.
