Yoga for Beginners
Want to try yoga? Definitely do it! But like all other new endeavors, take a bit of time to learn about it before diving in head-first.
The first step in starting a yoga routine is to pick a yoga type;there are many classes out there and you need to pick one that suits your personality, level of fitness, and desired objectives. For most beginners, Hatha or Vinyasa yoga is appropriate, the selection of which depends on whether you want a slow (Hatha) or faster paced (Vinyasa) class.
Step two will be to find a yoga class in your area. Yoga studious are popping up all over the place as yoga grows in popularity. An online search should suffice. If Google does not come through, check for ads in your local newspaper or wellness magazines. Oh, and if you are a member of gym, check with your gym to see if they offer yoga instruction before you spend time searching for a private studio!
Make sure you know what to bring for your first class. Most studios have mats to rent, but be sure to check. And if you want a mat and towel of your own, you can find these at a local sporting goods store.
On the day of your first class make sure to review your yoga etiquette so you feel comfortable entering unfamiliar territory. Remember that this “new” feeling only lasts for one class at most so approach it as a learning opportunity. You probably won’t be the only newcomer to the class so seek out the other beginners as well. Learn not only from the teacher, but by looking at and following other more experienced students as well.
A few tips:
• Don’t eat too much before class. You want to feel light and flexible during class.
• Yoga is done barefoot, so take off your shoes and socks before entering the room
• Do not wear heavy or restrictive clothing. You want to be able to move in all different directions and configuration.
• Do NOT be intimidated! You may just learn to love it!
