Bike Tours
Bicycle touring, also known as cyclotourism, involves touring, exploration and sightseeing by bicycle, generally with a group of people. This is a great form of recreation, a great way to see a new part of the world and a great way to meet new people. There are bike tours in the most densely populated, crowded cities and in the vast and open rural countryside. Here your prioritize pleasure and endurance over utility and speed. There are all different types of bike tours—tours for sightseeing in a new city, one-day tours to support a charity, or multi-day tours with a group where you have to bring all of your own necessary tools, equipment and food. Touring can be of any distance and any time. Depending on fitness, speed and the number of stops, the rider usually covers about 30–90 miles per day. A short tour over a few days may cover as few as 120 miles or as far as across the entire country.
The best way to begin is with a one day touring adventure either with a group or on your own alone or with friends. You could even incorporate this type of adventure into your vacation. Rent a bike, grab a map and navigate the lay of the land. You will save money on car rentals and gasoline, see parts of the city you’re visiting from a perspective you may have missed in a car, and burn calories- what a bargain. If you would rather not navigate on your own, there are usually companies in major tourist cities that operate daily bike tours. Some of these bike tours are tailored to your particular sightseeing interest or follow a particular route that exposes you to the best areas and attractions in the city. For example, in Boston, there are bike tours that follow the Freedom Trail, a red brick path through downtown Boston that leads to 16 historic sites including Paul Revere’s house and the Bunker Hill Monument.
Even if you are not visiting some new area of the world and are looking to go for a ride, there are an infinite number of charity rides each year, and there is sure to be one in your area.. Just as if you were doing a walk or a 5K for a good cause, you can do the same for cycling—get a crew together, make T shirts, raise money and feel good about yourself and your health!
